TRAFFIC JAM creates compositions that feature an instrumental ensemble of cars, trucks, and pedicabs. The performance will occur at the Blue Starlite Drive-In where audience members of any musical skill will play their vehicles, guided by a smart phone app with instructions. In addition, there will performances by line upon line percussion, duo Outlier, and choreographed performances by local pedicab drivers.
The musical compositions featured in this concert will be created in a series of community workshops, beginning in February 2015. The participants in the workshop will be students and families of Austin SoundWaves, an El Sistema-inspired program that offers free music instruction to students in east Austin. The workshops will be led by local artists and will explore composition, unconventional music making, and improvisation. In collaboration with these students, we will create new compositions that will be playable by community members in their vehicles.
The culminating performance will feature sound installations played on car stereos, monumental works for ensembles of car horns, and roving instrumental performances in the backseats of pedicabs. Featuring work by the composers of the Austin New Music Co-op, alumns of the UT Butler School of Music, line upon line percussion, and Outlier.
