Ghana ThinkTank has been “Developing the First World” since 2006.

They collect problems in the so-called “developed” world, and send them to think tanks they established in Cuba, Ghana, Iran, Mexico, El Salvador, and the U.S. prison system to analyze and solve. Their network continues to grow…

Then they work with the communities where the problems originated to implement those solutions – whether they seem impractical or brilliant.

By exchanging problems and looking for help in unexpected places, they flip typical power dynamics, shift points of view and build unlikely coalitions.

For Fusebox Austin, Ghana ThinkTank will focus on gentrification in Austin, Texas. Terms like change, authenticity, growth, creativity, and gentrification mean very different things to different people in Austin, and this project aims to delve into and present the often conflicting views and effects.

Using a pop-up wooden structure based on the Mexican folding block toy “Tablitas,” Ghana ThinkTank will run a series of on-the-street events throughout Austin, asking residents to submit their problems related to gentrification to be considered by the global network of think tanks.

Volunteers will help load and unload the cart into a pickup truck and engage with passer-bys as they interact with the cart.

This project is part of an 18-month community engagement and creative planning process focused on the development of thinkEAST, Fusebox will host a living charrette during the festival on this 24- acre site in East Austin. Our lead partners in this process include The City of Austin - Economic Development Department, the property owners (Richard deVarga & Robert Summers), entrepreneur Fred Schmidt, and TBG Partners.

Fusebox and our partners have held meetings with hundreds of stakeholders from the neighborhood, arts, creative industries, non-profits, education, government, healthcare, and private sector between July of 2014 and April 2015. The ideas and feedback we have collected thus far will be reflected at the thinkEAST site during our festival with temporary structures, performances, installations, workshops, classes, food events, and youth programs. Over four days we will be gathering additional input and ideas from the neighborhood and the arts community to help shape, explore and prototype strategies for creating a place rich in inspiration and innovation.

Think of a living charrette as a large, vibrant, public living room—a place to connect, test ideas, ask questions, break bread, and create together. In this particular case, with your help, we're exploring how to animate a dynamic mixture of tenants and businesses on site. What magic combination of non-profit and for-profit businesses, services, retail, and artist studios/performance spaces will spark each other in meaningful ways? AND how do we accomplish all this while also positively impacting the surrounding neighborhoods?

This entire process is guided by thorough research and investigation pertaining to affordability, sustainability, health, creative work space, culture, technology, history, and shared public space, among other things. We invite you to join us in imagining.
Light lifting involved.
