College Advising Corps at Brown Matriculation Coach

About

The College Advising Corps at Brown University's Swearer Center is recruiting talented and committed Matriculation Coaches to provide advising and support between high school graduation and college matriculation to decrease incidents of summer melt among economically disadvantaged youth in Rhode Island.


Expectations

Working closely with the Program Manager of the College Advising Corps, Matriculation Coaches will:

  • familiarize themselves with Rhode Island community assets and challenges

  • commit to shadowing a current College Adviser in May to meet senior students

  • commit fully to 1 week of training in July; topics include: college enrollment procedures, common causes of summer melt, and high-impact interventions in combating summer melt, developing productive mentorship and advising relationships with high school students

  • commit to ongoing Learning Communities on Friday afternoons (1-4pm) to establish a network of best practices and support  

  • commit to minimum daily hours of 8:00am-5:00pm

  • provide one on one college advising to low/moderate income recent high school students

  • utilize various technology interfaces, including, video, phone, text messaging, and email to advise students in the final college matriculation process

  • diligently record and track services and outcomes of students served

  • be responsible for their own group of students

  • work with Rhode Island School Districts to meet the needs of recent high school graduates by traveling to schools or public locations to meet with students in person

  • be eligible to complete a minimum-time term of AmeriCorps Service


Site Leaders dedicate an average of 45 hours per week for 8 weeks starting July 8, 2019 to August 23, 2019 to leading and managing their group of recent high school graduates.

  • Students are eligible for a $2,000 taxable stipend and an AmeriCorps education award with the completion of 300 hours of service. The stipend for the Matriculation Coach position is not an hourly wage but rather a stipended fellowship and, as such, does not need to be posted to Brown's Student Employment website.  


Eligibility  

Matriculation Coaches must be Brown undergraduates who are in Rhode Island from July to August.

Selection

Matriculation Coaches candidates will be interviewed and selected by groups that will include the Program Manager for the College Advising Corps, College Advising Corps Members and Swearer Center staff members.

This position is contingent on AmeriCorps funding.
