About

Why has ABConservation created a World Binturong Day? When the association was created, our first realization about the situation of binturongs was that this animal, besides suffering from deforestation and illegal traffic, was also poorly known by the broad general public. It sometimes even held true in countries the species is originally from! Although the binturong was discovered in the early 1800s, the first in situ study program on this species was launched about 2 centuries later. For the past 200 years, most data on the binturong was collected from captive individuals. However their behaviour can differ significantly from free-ranging individuals. Consequently, now in 2019, we still know very little about the binturong. How can we encourage people to protect it? To learn more about it? To preserve its natural habitat? The idea: Promoting the image of the binturong on an international level! What if the binturong could become the new panda? ABConservation is a small organization. It is led by two young women, who can't split themselves in two to make this animal know by a maximum of people! But what if there was one day in the year, a single day, where the whole world would be celebrating the binturong? Every year since 2015, on the second Saturday of May, more and more people are celebrating the binturong, wishing to know more about it, wanting to protect it and preserve its natural habitat. So why is there a World Binturong Day? I believe you can guess now!
