Join Zilker Botanical Garden and Gardens at Gus Garcia gardeners to build a keyhole garden. Come in the morning to experience building a keyhole garden from the ground up, or come in the afternoon to lend a hand planting, mulching, and watering the bed.
Keyhole gardens have gained popularity in dry regions around the world for their ability to retain moisture and nutrients. This is accomplished by building a circular raised garden bed out of everyday items (known as lasagna gardening), with a compost basket in the middle to continually distribute moisture, nutrients, and even beneficial organisms to the surrounding bed. A small slice in the circle facilitates easy access to the center basket which forms the keyhole shape.
