In 2005, Manna founded the Smart Sacks initiative which partners Manna Food, businesses and organizations, and elementary schools. Together we provide the children with backpacks full of kid‐friendly food every Friday so they have food on the weekends when there are no school meals to sustain them. The Smart Sacks program currently operates in more than 50 elementary schools, feeding more than 1,600 children each week. Smart Sacks is a perfect example of how a community comes together to solve a problem. Smart Sacks is an important component to breaking the cycle of hunger and poverty and provides children with the opportunity to learn and succeed at school.

Montgomery College's Offices of Student Life and Service-Learning Program currently support the following schools:

  • G: Fox Chapel Elementary School
  • R: Beal Elementary School
  • TP/SS: Broad Acres Elementary School

Through Manna Food, Montgomery College students on all three campuses help over a hundred children every week.

TO VOLUNTEER, contact your campus service-learning coordinator.

DROP-IN VOLUNTEERS are needed to help pack sacks on campus. Contact your campus service-learning coordinator about your campus schedule.

SMART SACKS STUDENT LEADERS serve for one or more semesters and:

  • pick up supplies,
  • coordinate the weekly packing,
  • deliver the sacks,
  • recruit volunteers,
  • raise awareness,
  • and advocate for solutions to hunger in Montgomery County.

If you would like to serve on your campus Manna Food leadership team, contact your campus service-learning coordinator.
