The Neighborhood Longhorns Program is hosting College For A Day, which invites about 150 students from grades 6-8 to visit the University of Texas at Austin and engage in a variety of activites, which includes a campus tour, lunch, and a college student panel.

Volunteer Descriptions

Shift One:

9:15am-10:00am: Meet students at Littlefield FOUNTAIN as they arrive. Introduce yourself to students. Tell students you will be their guide through the first session. Walk student groups to UTC 2.112A (Ensure students act appropriately on the walk over to the UTC. Be sure they are not jumping around, etc.)

10:00am-10:20am: Welcome and Introductions by staff. Help students get into cluster groups

Walk students to first session. (Again, ensure students act appropriately on the walk over to their session. Be sure they are not jumping around, etc.)

10:30am-10:45am: Session one begins (Throughout session watch students and keep them on track with the session. If they are loud/not paying attention, try to calm them.) Please, take photos of the kids at the session and send those photos to Dr. Mercedez at c.mercedez@austin.utexas.edu.

As session one ends, shift two volunteers should begin arriving to room report UTC 2.112A. If the volunteer meets you, you are free to leave. If volunteer does not arrive you MUST stay with the children.  Feel free to call/text Dr. Mercedez at 512-775-1759 if you have any issues. When shift two volunteer arrives introduce them to the students. They will then lead student to session two. 

Shift Two:

10:30 am   Report to UTC 2.112A for volunteer check-in. You will be assigned a tour to guide at this point. Maps will be given at this point.

10:40am-10:45am:  Arrive to your assigned tour group location. After checking in, meet the first shift volunteer to relieve them from their shift. Volunteer from shift one should introduce you to student group. Once introduced,  lead students to session two.

10:50am-11:25am: Session two begins. Throughout session watch students and keep them on track with the session. If they are loud/not paying attention, try to calm them. Please, take photos of the kids at the session and send those photos to Dr. Mercedez at c.mercedez@austin.utexas.edu.

11:35am-11:50am:    Campus Tours (per assigned maps). Take all students to 5th floor BEL (stadium –enter thru gates 4 or 5) by the souvenir shop. Take any elevator to the 5th floor –Club room.  Once at location, separate girls from boys and sit them on their respective side.

Boys will be on the right side and the girls will enter through the left doors. 

11:55am-12:15pm:    “The 4-1-1 on College Life” Presentations (BEL 5th floor)

12:15pm-12:30pm:    Lunch (BEL 5th floor)

12:30pm-12:55pm:    College Student Panel (BEL 5th floor)

12:55pm-1:00pm: Dismissal/Wrap Up. Take students to Winship Circle back to their buses. (Ensure students act appropriately on the walk over to the buses. Be sure they are not jumping around, etc.)
