Service Learning student will assist the Volunteer Department in inspiring people to give of their time and talents to create a positive impact in the community. Met Council's volunteer department works with nearly 2,000 volunteers a year in meaningful service opportunities. Being an intern in this department within Met Council will provide the intern the opportunity to enhance communication skills, written and oral as well as understand what it takes to put on an event. This internship provides a chance to have direct contact with our volunteers and to see a project through from start to finish.
Met Council is one of New York’s top human service agencies helping 100,000 New Yorkers fight poverty each year. Our services include crisis intervention, legal and immigration assistance, benefits outreach and enrollment, kosher food pantries and vouchers, career training and assistance, domestic violence counseling, affordable housing, home care, and home repairs. As a large anti-poverty nonprofit in New York City, we use many volunteers to multiply the impact of our services in the community and to help clients through education and advocacy.
This externship will focus specifically on food insecurity, food distribution, and the Jewish holiday of Passover. The student will aid Met Council's Kosher Food Network, Benefits Access, and Volunteer Services department in executing over one hundred food distributions in the weeks leading up to Passover. Tasks will include: volunteer recruitment, curriculum planning, program coordination, scheduling, food distribution, collection of demographic information, and SNAP benefits outreach and screening.
