On It's My Park Day, we removed nearly every ligustrum from a one-acre patch of woods in Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park. In this project we will return to that area to add the finishing touches:
  • Spread the mulch made from the ligustrums we uprooted on IMPD. In fact, we will spread it over new sprouts and fallen berries in and around that patch of woods—using ligustrum mulch to kill ligustrum sprouts.
  • Uproot any remaining ligustrums that we can reach.
  • Girdle as many large ligustrums as we can reach. (It's easy again!)
  • Take on any other invasive plants we can reach—Taiwanese photinia, Chinese pistache, chinaberry, Chinese tallow, Nandina, and at least some of the honeysuckle.
  • If we cover all of those bases, take on a few more small projects in the immediate vicinity.
I will bring my personal weed wrench, garden rakes, hoes, lopping shears, and girdling tools. If you have comparable tools and want to bring your own, please do.

Wear long pants and sturdy, mud-tolerant shoes. Poison ivy is avoidable, but prevalent enough that I've gotten a little bit of a rash each of the last two times I've been out. So cover up unless you're absolutely sure you are not sensitive to it. Bring drinking water, too.
Let's try not to bend my weed wrench. ;-)
PerksA warm feeling of having done good stuff for your community.
Parking DetailsFrom Lamar, go to the third entrance to a parking lot on the right. From Willow Wild, go to the second entrance to a parking lot on the left. This is on the other side of the road from the pool and paved trail, and it's just west of the picnic shelter.
