The National Archives and Records Administration is an independent agency of the United States government charged with the preservation and documentation of government and historical records. It is also tasked with increasing public access to those documents which make up the National Archive. The Citizen Archivist program is a crowdsourced program to transcribe thousands of documents in the Archives' collection. Transcribing handwritten and typed documents helps researchers be able to search documents by keyword as well as for records to show up on search engines like Google. Transcription also allows documents to be read by screenreaders, making documents more accessible to blind and visually impaired people. GW volunteers will have the chance to transcribe documents of their choice that range from military award records to an array of veteran specific records.
To participate, students should watch a virtual orientation found here and review the instructions located here. At anytime during the month of November they can log onto the Citizen Archivist site here to work on the project.
