Please join us on Sunday, April 6 from 9am-12pm at SFC’s future home off east MLK to help and supervise the J-SERVE teens. We are planning to have a fun-filled work day and would love for you to join in the celebration and appreciation of our Earth’s natural environment! Help us cultivate and prepare our garden so that our neighborhoods can grow, share and prepare healthy, local food.

For almost 40 years, we have been Sustainable Food Center without a center. In 2007 the Meredith family made SFC a partner in their vision for the vibrant east side by presenting a gift of land and infrastructure in their mixed-use space currently under development. With the training facility and community garden, we project that by 2015, SFC will:
• Increase Farm Direct project sales by 50% annually.
• Increase participation in the Grow Local Program by 50%.
• Increase participation in The Happy Kitchen/La Cocina Alegre™ by 200%.• Make Sprouting Healthy Kids, our farm-to-school project, available to all AISD schools.

The work you will be doing will prepare the garden for fall planting allowing neighborhood families, including residents at Foundation Communities’ M Station, to have a lasting way to be food secure. The 2.3 acre community garden will also function as a teaching garden for SFC to train neighborhood groups on how to start community gardens near their homes.
Please help us build healthy soil at the new garden! Bring along your kitchen scraps (no meat, dairy, oily foods) or a bag of raked leaves from your yard (no grass, please) when you come to volunteer.

From seed to table, SFC creates opportunities for individuals to make healthy food choices and to participate in a vibrant local food system. Through organic food gardening, relationships with area farmers, interactive cooking classes and nutrition education, children and adults have increased access to locally grown food and are empowered to improve the long-term health of Central Texans and our environment.
Ages 10 and up.
