Project Description:

Loneliness in the elderly population is a common problem. COVID-19 has only increased the isolation of seniors living in residential care through restrictions on visitors, gathering in groups for activities, eating in dining rooms, etc. While some have families that are finding ways to connect, many do not. Your service learning project will help to ease the loneliness and isolation and provide connection and stimulation the elders in our community. You will be sending communications and helping to bring a bright spot into the day of an elder. Additionally, you will be creating and sending activities to help engage resident’s cognitive and physical function. We are certain it will have an impact on you as well!

Students will support resident’s needs for social connection, and stimulation for cognitive and physical function through sending cards/letters, creative pieces and puzzles/games/activities that residents can do on their own or in small groups. See descriptions below for more detail. The deadline for the activities and letters is November 21st to the site and the OneDrive for this course.

A. Puzzles/Games/Activities - create to scale for individual and up to small group implementation. Students will create a minimum of one (1) activity (you are welcome to provide more than one activity).

Students will create activities or games that provide stimulation of cognitive and physical function, are entertaining and can be adapted for multiple levels of functioning. (i.e. word search, color/number finding games, fill in the blank stories, etc.).

Final deliverables to be shared with site and uploaded into OneDrive folder for Service Learning (see below) Projects should include:

·       Written instructions on how to do the activity.

·       List of any materials or props needed.

·       Details of design:

o   How many people is this designed for?

o   What are the intended outcomes of the activity?

o   How to modify for different levels of function?

o   How to modify for individual or group use?

B. Cards/letters/door decorations/art projects - this could be general or targeted to Thanksgiving and/or fall themed. Students will send a minimum of 5 cards/letters and will include with each, one of the creative options listed below:

·       Decorations for a resident's door.

·       Art project for a resident, such as painting, drawing, collage, poem, etc.

Service Days/Times: Activity creation and communications will be created on your own time. Students are strongly encouraged to make and send communications throughout the semester to help combat isolation and loneliness of elders. The deadline for the activities and letters is November 21st to the site and the OneDrive for this course (upload the project and/or photos of completed work).

Mandatory Orientation: Project orientation will be held Tuesday, September 21st from 11-11:50 am on Zoom (invite sent by service learning staff).

Guidelines and Compliance Requirements:

·       Vaccination is not required for this site. Service is virtual.

Student Expectations & Responsibilities:

·       Service learning hours/impacts for assignments and projects are tracked using GivePulse. Students are responsible for logging hours/impacts for all service learning assignments (e.g. reflection papers, service learning plan, etc.) and site placement/project hours (e.g. orientation session with site, service hours, research, project creation, meetings, etc.). Students do NOT receive hours/impacts for Preflection, Midflection, Postflection, or the assessment survey. See the hours/impacts-logging information provided by service learning staff. Service Learning staff will verify your hours in GivePulse, provide a report to site supervisor for verification, and will provide a list of student hours to the course instructor for grading. Hours are due in GivePulse by the Postflection session.

·       Students will post their “project deliverables” (i.e. curriculum, educational materials, activities, etc.) to the OneDrive folder for the course using the link provided by service learning staff in an email at the beginning of the course. For projects that do not include an electronic deliverable (i.e. letters, art, journals, etc.), students will upload a photo to the OneDrive site. For site placements/projects that do not include a deliverable, students will write a one-paragraph overview of the work they completed this semester and post that to the OneDrive folder for the course. Team projects only need one posting to OneDrive by one team member. Site placement/projects are completed by your Postflection session (see dates above).

·       The Service Learning Assessment Survey is a requirement of this course. The survey link will be sent by service learning staff by the Postflection session. Due 5 days after it is sent to students.

COVID-19 Protocols:

·       Note: students may be required to wear masks for meetings, Preflections, Postflections, and other events associated with service learning for the protection of all attendees.
