#OptOutWeekend: Rescue Native Plants from Construction in Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park

Friday, November 26th from 9:00am to Sunday, November 28th, 2021 4:00pm

About

Update: Because of drizzle, which is forecast to continue through this evening, Saturday's shifts are canceled. Sunday is supposed to be clear, so plans are still on for a workday then.

Work with Keep Walnut Creek Wild to rescue native plants before construction begins on Section 2A of the Northern Walnut Creek Trail. This coming Monday, Nov. 29, workers with chainsaws and earth-moving equipment will probably be clearing the route nearest the trailhead in Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park. If we act quickly, we can transplant some plants to nearby locations where they will not only survive but are desperately needed and bring others home for TLC until the right place to use them opens up.

When Do We Meet?

As mentioned above, due to drizzle and cold I have canceled Saturday's events. Better weather is in the forecast for Sunday, so we will work then.

Sunday, we will start at 9 a.m. and work until about 4:30 p.m. Come out for the whole time, or come out for a couple of hours. However much you can do will make a difference.

Where Do We Meet?

Look for the Keep Walnut Creek Wild signs along the edge of the woods between the trailhead of the paved trail and the kiosk near the trailhead of the unpaved trails.

Who Can Help?

Under city rules for limiting risk of transmitting Covid, you must be at least 18 or, if accompanied by your parent or guardian, 16. Other than that, if you can do even just one of these tasks, you can help:

  • Dig up plants as directed. (We will tell you which ones!)
  • Just dig. (We will need dirt as well as plants!)
  • Snip cuttings we can use to grow new plants.
  • Gather seed from plants we point out.
  • Scatter seeds where we point out.
  • Replant plants in the ground.
  • Wheel a wagon, wheelbarrow, or cart, from "here" to "there."
  • Accept plants and care for them until we can use them elsewhere. (At the longest, you would need to care for them until Monday, Jan. 11.
  • Deliver rescued plants to people who can accept and care for them.

Do I Need to Know Native Plants?

No. You don't even need to know plants. We will give you a specific plant to work on and a specific task to do with it.

What Should I Wear?

  • Bring a face mask.
  • Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and long pants.
  • You would be smart to wear long sleeves. There are patches of poison ivy and greenbrier. Less exposure is better.
  • If you have gardening gloves, bring them—but we will have loaners if you need them.
  • A cheerful smile!
  • Other than that, dress for the weather. Wearing layers would be wise, because some areas are more exposed to the breeze and others are protected.

What Should I Bring?

Bring your own drinking water. Other than that, we will have tools, but if you can bring your own, please do. These items are especialy helpful:

  • A wagon, wheelbarrow, or garden cart.
  • Watering cans
  • Containers of water for plants (They don't need to be drinkably clean.)
  • Empty 1-gallon to 5-gallon plastic pots (like the ones nurseries use)
  • Buckets or washtubs
  • Large plastic tubs (like trays made for mixing concrete)
  • Other large, shallow containers—even cardboard boxes like a case of bottled drinks would come in

Stop COVID!

In light of the current COVID pandemic we have worked with our partners at Austin Parks and Recreation Department to implement these procedures:

  • To volunteer, you MUST register in GivePulse. (We can help you do this when you arrive.)
  • Volunteers MUST wear masks.
  • We will have only a few registration slots available, so:
    • Register only if you are certain you can participate
    • If life happens after you have registered but before the event, please cancel your registration so we can open that spot back up.
  • Volunteers must be 16 or over, and accompanied by an adult if under 18.
  • Social-distancing practices will be maintained throughout project.
  • Unvaccinated volunteers must wear a mask and bring their own water and snacks.
  • Stay home and cancel your registration if:
    • You are immunocompromised or at risk.
    • You have been exposed to someone who tested positive.
    • Your health-care provider has directly told you to self-quarantine.

Thanks! I am looking forward to working with y'all.
