About
University Housing needs your help with our annual "Dawgs Ditch the Dumpster" campaign! Help our campus reduce waste through our large end of the year move out donation collections. We will have over 7,500 students moving out beginning Monday May 2nd through Saturday May 14th.
This year we are encouraging our residents to think about reusing, reselling, swapping, and lastly donating before dumping. For those residents who would rather donate their items when they move off campus (think futons, fans, shelves, clothing, electronics, etc) we will have various donation stations conveniently placed nearby our residence halls. In an effort to give back to Athens-Clarke County, University Housing will collaborate with many local non-profits to receive these donations. The organizations that will be receiving these donations are Project Safe, America's Thrift Store benefiting Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and the UGA Swap Shop. This initiative usually averages around 60,000 lbs diverted from the landfill each year. That's enough donations to fully stuff about 8 53' trailers!
This waste reduction campaign started back in 2011 with the help of a student submitted Campus Sustainability Grant from the Office of Sustainability. We need the help of our campus community to assist with this large scale landfill diversion event. Volunteering tasks consist of checking on various donation sites and ensuring that items are strategically placed inside the trailers.
UGA volunteers will receive a free Dawgs Ditch the Dumpster T-shirt and a gift card to a local thrift store, as well as good luck for finals!
