Reading Partners: Empower Students by Reading Support for students

Open Opportunity

Reading Partners is a national nonprofit that mobilizes communities to provide students with the proven, individualized reading support they need to read at grade level by fourth grade.

Volunteer reading partners spend one hour a week helping students gain lifelong literacy skills that will empower their learning.

As Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, we have many skills that are needed today: cross-cultural understanding, language skills, flexibility, and understanding of others.  Partnerships like these, allow RPCVs to channel the expertise and passion we bring into the projects and initiatives of organizations that need our experience, cross-cultural fluency, advanced language abilities, and technical competencies that we have gained and they enhance our capacity to create meaningful change here in the US, much as we have done since Sargent Shriver first called us to ‘Serve, Serve, Serve’.

  • Give as little as one hour a week
  • Flexible weekday volunteer times
  • Follow a highly effective, easy-to-use curriculum.
  • No prior experience is required.

Based on district and school campus guidelines in each local area, tutoring may be available in person and/or online. If you have questions or concerns related to COVID-19, please visit our FAQs.

We partner with under-resourced schools and engage volunteer reading partners to work one-on-one with students who struggle with reading. Our volunteers provide hour-long tutoring sessions to students— following a structured, evidence-based curriculum developed with an expert team of curriculum advisors.

The program model is backed by evidence-based research, which proves that students make significant gains in reading.
