About

Join us for the first Baileys Dirt Fondo and Fundraiser on Saturday, October 14, 2023, presented by Trek! Our “Dirt Fondo” is adapted from a traditional Italian “Gran Fondo”, and will feature a singletrack adventure consisting of casual riding between optionally-timed “segments”. Rest stops throughout the courses will feature local treats to keep you energized for the trail ahead. Don’t miss out on your chance to support and explore the Baileys Trail System this fall!

As a part of the fundraiser portion of the event, we will be raffling off a Trek Slash 9.8, donated by Trek! To purchase raffle tickets, click here: Trek Raffle.

We want to show our appreciation for the time you dedicate to volunteering for this event. Volunteers will be eligible for the following specific perks based on the # of hours worked:

We need your help to put on this event! Consider supporting the event by signing up to volunteer. Volunteers can choose from a variety of tasks and shifts, ranging from the week before the event to the day of. Tasks include the following:

Rest Stop Volunteer: Rest Stop Volunteers assist all race participants and providing care, encouragement, and supplies. Rest Stop Volunteers may need to refill water containers, hand out food, retrieve drop bags, and more for the participants to make their race a success! Volunteers will also prepare hydration and food and restock items as needed during the race.

Finish Line Food & Beverage Volunteer: Finish Line volunteers will manage a food and beverage station at the end of the race. Volunteers will stock and hand out food and beverage, set up/tear down, and manage alcohol sales. Volunteers will maintain a roped off area for those consuming alcoholic beverages.

Rest Stop Captain: Rest Stop captains will coordinate with the race director on getting equipment, food, and hydration to rest stops. Rest Stop Captains will lead setup and teardown of sites to return to race headquarters. Rest stop captains must be enthusiastic and provide an awesome atmosphere for participants, rest Stop volunteers, and crew members/spectators. Rest Stop Captains will also enforce turn-back times and provide directions to the participants. Some Rest Stop Captains may need to organize participant drop bags.

Registration Aid: Registration volunteers must be very well organized and will help with checking in participants, issuing their bib numbers and race packets either the day before the race or the morning of the race. These volunteers may also need to fill out bib information manually or electronically.

Fun Ride Timing Team: Volunteers on the Fun Ride Timing Team will assist in manual timing for the Youth/Family Fun Ride. The timing team will be stationed at the start and finish of the youth segment. At the conclusion of the race, this team will organize results and share with Race Directors.

Course Marker: Course markers will assist with signage and a pre-race review of the entire course. Course markers will be assigned to a section of the course to distribute appropriate signage on during their shift on foot or by bike. Instructions and route information for each intersection's marking will be provided.

Course Sweeper: Course Sweepers will review the entire course behind the last participant to make sure every participant is safe and on course, pick up any trash that they find, and remove all course markings. Sweepers may choose to run, hike, or ride their assigned course section. A bag for carrying course markings, as well as route assignments will be provided.

General Volunteer: General Volunteers are willing to address any tasks as needed and will fill important gaps in the volunteer team.

Course Marshall: Course Marshalls are responsible for helping participants navigate the course by managing critical intersections. Course Marshalls will carry a first aid kit and a communication method and must be prepared to offer first aid to a participant, as well as communicate on any emergency situation. Course Marshalls will become very familiar with their assigned area of the course.

All proceeds from the Dirt Fondo will support the management and development of the Baileys Trail System, the work of the Outdoor Recreation Council of Appalachia (ORCA), its nonprofit partner Athens-Wayne Outdoor Asset Development Corporation (AWOADC), and our mission: "To integrate conservation, outdoor recreation, and economic development to strengthen and inspire communities in Appalachian Ohio."
