Operations Maintenance – Seasonal - Temporary

Reports To:

 Operations Supervisor

Purpose of Position:

The Operations Maintenance Staff is responsible for our visitor’s first impression of the park while enriching their experience in the Park through day to day basic maintenance and horticultural care. They are committed to working as a team to preserve and promote a safe and healthy park and environment for our guests. This position requires a person to be dedicated to helping visitors while providing guidance and assistance to guests when appropriate. Our park team is expected to demonstrate the highest level of professionalism in their public engagement, and is committed to demonstrating Shelby Farms Park Conservancy’s core values.     

Essential Functions:

  • Conducts daily maintenance checks and reports actions/repairs of major problems to supervisors.

  • Preforms basic park maintenance and minor repairs as needed

  • Maintains zones of park daily by use of landscape best practices, insuring health and vitality of all plant communities.

Requirements:

  • Physical ability to perform required tasks and work outdoors in extreme environmental conditions (heat, cold, inclement weather).

  • Must have prior experience in Landscape/ Grounds Maintenance field.

  • Must be available to work some weekend days and some holidays/school breaks if needed.

  • Excellent communications skills and a service orientation.

  • Dependable, self-motivated and self-aware

  • Consistently positive outlook with a “can-do” attitude toward challenges

  • Operate vehicles and powered equipment such as: mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, snow blowers, chain saws, electric clippers, sod clippers and pruning saws.

  • Use hand tools such as: shovels, hammers, saws, drivers, rakes, axes, and pruners.

  • Prune or trim trees shrubs or hedges using shears, pruners or chain saws.

  • Gather and remove litter

  • Maintain or repair equipment, tools, fences or benches using power tools.

  • Follow plans and landscape designs and instructions to determine cut back and spray needs.

  • Plant trees, shrubs, grasses, and plants.

  • Haul and spread topsoil, mulch and ground cover.


This is a paid internship - pay rate is $10/hour.

This internship will take place from end of May to the beginning of August - exact schedules will be determined between intern and supervisor
