Legal Aid of Arkansas is a non-profit organization that improves the lives of low-income Arkansans by championing equal access to justice for all. Each of the staff attorneys in the Springdale office rotate to staff the weekly Washington County Help Desk. The Help Desk is located in the law library on the 5th floor at the main courthouse in Fayetteville at 280 N. College (on the corner of College and Dickson). This Help Desk occurs each Friday (except holidays when the courthouse is closed) from 9am to noon. The Help Desk assists pro se litigants and provides them the tools to represent themselves in court, when they are unable to afford to hire private counsel and Legal Aid of Arkansas doesn't have the resources to take their case for representation for extended services. We are looking for interested law students to assist the lawyer each week. We draft pleadings for the pro se litigant, we advise them on how to represent themselves at a hearing, we draft correspondence, and we conduct any necessary research. Students can assist the attorney in any of these areas. Topics vary from domestic violence including orders of protection, family law including divorce, custody, child support, guardianships and emancipations, consumer law including garnishments and petitions to seal, economic justice including social security disability and food stamps, housing including criminal and civil evictions and small estate administration, and traffic tickets. Bilingual students are encouraged to apply. No training is necessary. The lawyer will always be present and you will work closely with the lawyer. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out! We look forward to working with you.
We are looking for law students attending the University of Arkansas Fayetteville School of Law. First, second and third year students are accepted. You do not have to be Rule 15 to sign up.
