Girls Inc. of Metro Denver inspires all girls to be Strong, Smart, and Bold through life changing programs and experiences that help girls navigate barriers and reach their full potential. We provide year round academic-achievement and skill-building programs that are delivered by trained, mentoring professionals in a positive all-girl environment. These programs reach over 2,000 girls and families each year. No other Denver agency offers such comprehensive programming designed specifically for the unique needs of girls.

Summary of Position: Help coordinate Girls Inc.’s summer Internship Program for 9th/10th graders.

Program Dates: Monday, June 5 – Thursday, August 3

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with Girls Inc. of Metro Denver’s Intern Supervisor to maintain workflow structure, organization and efficiency for a successful 9 week program.
  •  Take direction from our Intern Supervisor and also effectively supervise 10-12 high school interns with clear expectations and coaching.  
  • Cultivate girls’ confidence with hard and soft workplace skills (interns are placed in our kitchen or as assistants to program managers.)
  •  Drive Girls Inc.’s vans and shuttles to transport girls to local field trips.
  •  Supervise high school interns as they open the center in the morning (interns will prep breakfast, lunch, greet girls at the door and complete admin work.)
  • Encourage girls to be ‘self-starters’ and be proactive by example.
  • Attend weekly group meetings to check in with interns.
  • Manage behavior and mediate difficult conversations.
  • Maintain a positive environment for all girls through discipline, proactive management and inclusiveness.
  • Substitute for Intern Supervisor when she is out of the building.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.  
  • Proactive, outgoing, enthusiastic and dependable
  • Ability to delegate tasks and address issues of concern as they occur.
  • Willingness to jump in and take on leadership roles as needed.
  • Prepared to serve breakfast in a busy environment with children.
  • Preferred but not required:
  • Experience working with children
  • Experience working in a kitchen or food service setting
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • Able to regularly communicate by e-mail.
  • Able to interact positively with a variety of people with various cultural backgrounds and economic experiences.

Time Commitment: Applicants should be available 2-4 times per week, Monday-Thursday from 7:30am-12:30pm. Your shifts are the
same 2-4 days for all 9 weeks of summer programs. Daily schedule:

v  7:30-8:00am Supervise interns as they arrive and prep breakfast

v  8:00-9:00am Interns serve breakfast

v  9:00-9:30 Interns clean kitchen

v  9:30-11:30am Interns are directed to take on tasks from the Opportunity Time board (kitchen inventory, data entry, prep field trip lunches, snack counts, etc.)

v  11:30am-12:00pm Prep for Lunch

 
Applicants should be able to commit to the entire duration of summer programs from June 5 – August 4, 2017. If interns are expecting more than 3 days of absences, or similarly cannot commit to the end of summer, we ask that applicants please consider school-year volunteering instead.

Pay Rate:  Internships are unpaid unless the applicant is a recipient of off-campus work study in their financial aid package at the
following universities: University of Colorado Denver, Regis University or Colorado Technical University. Pay rates for work study are dependent on each university but typically range from $11-15/hour.

Important Dates:  NEW VOLUNTER ORIENTATION AND TRAINING + INCLUSIVENESS

Saturday, June 3rd from 8:45am-5pm

·         A light breakfast and full lunch will be provided; lunch is on site.

·         Thank you for understanding that we do not make exceptions to this being a required training. It is offered only three times a year (January, June and August), so be sure not to miss it!

 

HIGH SCHOOL INTERN TRAININGS (4:30-6:30pm each day):

·         May 23, 24, 25, 30, 31 and June 1

 

MID-SUMMER FLY FISHING TRIP: July 14-16 in Boulder, CO

Attend our end-of-summer Fly Fishing Trip (July 14-16) and assist with keeping girls safe at an off-site location.

ADDITIONAL TRAINING WITH INTERN SUPERVISOR TBD
