Welcome Orientation Guides! The Center for Student Engagement has organized a service day activity for you as part of the Orientation Guide Training.
We will be splitting into two groups and going to serve with two different community partner organizations. One group will be coming to Washoe County School District Volunteer Services to help with the book program.
Thanks to donations and community support, we have over 200,000 books to give to schools. Because we are so abundant in books, VISTA Richard Birmingham came up with the idea of expanding the literacy value by opening exchange centers in key areas of the community to allow student to just bring in a book and get another book to take home. We have book exchange locations at the Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers and Sisters, public libraries, afterschool programs; Team-Up 21st Century, City of Sparks, Boys and Girls Club afterschool programs and City of Reno and now, today at our at Duncan Elementary School, our first school site. At each of these exchange locations, each student has been given a free book to keep or exchange. We have already supplied over 10,000 books to help centers get started.
