If you answered yes, then become a Sierra Nevada Journeys (SNJ) intern today! SNJ is built on a simple premise: Science Education is a necessity, and nature's classroom is a great place to teach it. Our mission is to deliver innovative outdoor, science-based education programs for youth to develop critical thinking skills and to inspire natural resource stewardship. To achieve this mission, SNJ offers a range of programming to students in northern Nevada and California.
  • Our credentialed teachers create innovative, engaging curriculum for 1st - 6th graders, teach in the classroom and lead field expeditions.
  • We host students, teachers, and families at our Outdoor School located at Grizzly Creek Ranch, near Portola, Ca, and run an epic summer camp for 8-17 year olds.
  • We train teachers on how to bring engaging STEM lessons to their classrooms as well as how to utilize the outdoor classroom.
  • Through our Family Science/STEM Nights, we involve families to reinforce classroom concepts.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
SNJ is currently seeking capable interns to lead small groups of elementary students on field-based studies at local nature areas, during the school year. Selected individuals will undergo orientation and training with SNJ, which will include classroom and field-based program observation.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Outdoor field studies include leading trail groups of 12-15 students through a variety of field-based activities (problem solving, earth science, watershed science, natural systems etc.) during 1/2 day and full day field trips to local nature areas.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working with kids*
  • Availability at least 2 weekdays a week from 9am-2pm
  • Commitment of at least 2 academic semesters**
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Current Red Cross CPR and First Aid Certification, or willingness to obtain certification. SNJ will help facilitate and cover cost.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and 2-3 miles with a backpack
*No prior experience may be considered
