The hotline screener's role is to help callers access our services for the first time. A caller's first impression of our Legal Hotlines and of Texas Advocacy Project will often depend on the handling of this initial telephone call.
Volunteer Screeners answer live calls and collect and enter information into our database. Screeners make an initial determination regarding caller’s safety, explain the nature of the service the hotline provides, and conduct a conflict check. Screeners then determine whether the call must be declined (making referrals when necessary) or referred to a Project attorney for call back.
We provide training to enable our volunteer screeners to feel competent in assessing caller needs, and staff is always on hand to answer questions.
Minimum 2 hour per week commitment any time during our hotline hours: Mon-Fri, 8:30am – 5:30pm. Volunteers are especially needed during our peak call hours in the late morning and early afternoon.
Requirements for this volunteer position are reliable time commitment and compassionate attitude towards victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Familiarity entering information into a computer database is helpful.
