Met Council is enlisting the help of volunteers to help seniors in affordable housing by enrolling in the program SCRIE (Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption). The SCRIE program offers eligible seniors exemption from future rent increases thus allowing those with limited means to remain in housing that is affordable. If qualified, the rent amount paid will be frozen and the City of New York will provide the designated landlord with a property tax credit which is equal to the amount of future rent increases.
Volunteers are needed to help inform seniors about eligibility for the SCRIE program and also help guide them through the application process as some seniors need assistance in filling out the necessary paperwork. Volunteers will also be asked to assist seniors located at nearby Met Council housing sites to walk to the central location of where the SCRIE ENROLL-A-THON is taking place.
