Volunteers In Public Schools (VIPS) is a non-profit organization that strives to make a difference where it matters most, in the lives of our children. There are several ways you can get involved with VIPS!
EveryBody Reads- be a Reading Friend to a student who has been identified as reading below their grade level. These students often lack access to books at home, may not get home work help or a one-on-one story time at home, and often need a consistent adult in their lives.
- Time commitment- 30 minutes/ weekly for the duration of the school year
- If you cannot commit to meeting with a student weekly, you can pair up with a friend and the two of you can alternate seeing the student weekly.
- This program is offered at 35 different schools. Student availability depends on the times provided by his or her teacher, but are typically during the school day (between 8:30 am and 2:30 pm). You do not have to visit your student on the same day or time each week.
EveryOne Counts- be a Math Friend to a student who has been identified as being below grade level in math. These students often need a confidence boost and need someone to help them visualize what numbers look like and how they apply to every day life.
- Time commitment- 30 minutes/ weekly for the duration of the school year
- If you cannot commit to meeting with a student weekly, you can pair up with a friend and the two of you can alternate seeing the student weekly.
- This program is offered at 6 different schools. Student availability depends on the times provided by his or her teacher, but are typically during the school day (between 8:30 am and 2:30 pm). You do not have to visit your student on the same day or time each week.
Partners In Education- Partner with a school for an ongoing or one time project based on your interests and the school's needs.
Partnerships can be anything you want them to be. Some examples include:
- Storytime
- Storytime and art project
- School Beautification Day
- Lunch With U!- Eat lunch with students and chat with them
- Recess— play with students during their recess time
- School Special Events— Assist with school special events
- Teddy Bear Nursing Project— teach students about nursing and the medical by bringing Teddy Bears. You can teach them how to take a temperature, put a bandage on, etc. using the Teddy Bear!
- Adopt a school or classroom
- School supply drive
- Clothing drive
- Personal Hygiene supply drive
- STEM activity
- Healthy Habits workshop
- AND MORE....
GO TEAM!- assist VIPS with special events or assist schools with special events such as science fairs, story times, book fairs, etc.
