Furry Friends Refuge is a no-kill humane shelter with locations in West Des Moines and Des Moines. Since our founding we have advocated for and implemented the no-kill equation to match 1,000's of pets with loving homes. Our volunteers are a vital part of our mission helping provide care and enrichment for our shelter residents, assisting adopters, and participating in adoption and education events in our community. They also work with us to utilize their special skill sets like web design, construction, fundraising, event planning, photography, and so much more!
Volunteers attend volunteer training and can work directly with our volunteer coordinator to help find the right volunteer opportunities for them.
There are 3 ways to volunteer at Furry Friends, as an individual volunteer, by participating in a one time group event, or by fostering.
Individual volunteers work with our program working with the animals, providing assistance to our customers, and helping make sure our shelter is running smoothly. Our schedule is extremely flexible with volunteer activities available between 8am and 8pm 365 days a year. You can schedule your shifts online. We ask for a volunteer commitment of at least 8 hours a month. Some of the options available to individual volunteers include reception at our shelter, animal care and enrichment, and our sparkle crew who makes sure our shelter is looking good! We also have many outreach opportunities in the community for volunteers who can't make it into the shelter.
Apply and register for volunteer orientation here.
Group volunteers are volunteers who come as a group to assist at the shelter. Groups can come up to twice a month without having to attend volunteer orientation. Group volunteering is scheduled at either of our locations depending on the needs of the shelter and the group and we can typically accommodate 6-10 people depending on the timeframe. Whether you're volunteering as a workplace, a group of civic minded friends, youth group, or other opportunity you can fill out our group volunteer application here.
Fosters are volunteers who provide care for our adoptable animals in their homes. There are many reasons an animal might need fostering, young kittens need time to grow before being available for adoption. Some animals have medical or behavioral needs or simply struggle in the fast paced shelter environment. Our fosters are critical in helping us increase our lifesaving ability.
