Jessica, my co-mentor, and I chose this volunteer opportunity as our group event with our small session mentees. I enjoyed this event because I got to appreciate the beauty of the creek as we moved up, cleaning all of the garbage we could reach. Most importantly, I felt this event helped me connect with the other students as we traveled as one unit through the fairly "tough" terrain. I would definitely love to volunteer again for these kind of event as it was a great way to help and connect with the ULN community.
It was a great event! We started near Clark Field and split off into two groups, one going North and one going South. Each group pretty much just walked down Waller Creek collecting any trash that was around.
Cleaning the creek was a great experience. Everyone that participated had a bright, positive attitude and did their part, which allowed us to accomplish much more than I thought was possible. After a few hours of hard work, it was very rewarding to take a picture with the full bags of trash and reflect upon all that we were able to accomplish in such a short amount of time. This experience made me realize that it we all picked up one piece of trash a day, the world would be a much better place for us all to enjoy. If everyone did a little, a lot would be achieved collectively. I look forward to participating again in the future.
