Trick or treated in a nearby neighborhood from approximately 5-7 p.m., and asked for canned goods to donate to the Capital Food Bank. Great experience, and very pleasant encounters with all of the residents.

I volunteered for the LCAE Project Volunteer’s “Hungry Halloween” event on Friday, Oct. 31, 2014. This was an annual volunteer event hosted by LCAE’s Project Volunteer group in partnership with the Capital Area Food Bank to collect canned goods and non-perishable food items to donate to local Austin families in need.

Compared to my first volunteering experience at UT (“zero waste” soccer match), this volunteer experience was very satisfying. Witnessing the generosity of the middle-class families in Austin was very touching. Almost every family that we visited greeted us with a friendly smile and brought us canned and non-perishable goods. Additionally, the cause was very worthwhile. As the winter approaches the families in need will appreciate the donations of canned and preserved food. It was a fulfilling experience to trick-or-treat not for yourself but for others in need. For me, as the bags got heavier I was more motivated to carry on. It was amazing to see the all of the bags full of food when we all met up at the end to drive back to campus.

This experience reminded me of another Halloween related volunteering that I had done back in middle school. During middle school, whenever I went trick or treating, I carried a donation box from UNISEF to collect change along with my normal trick-or-treating. As I went around the houses to collect candy, I would collect donations for UNICEF to help support the children in need of aid overseas. Though the candy was delicious, perhaps the donation collection was more satisfying.

Overall I enjoyed this volunteering experience very much, I was shown the generosity of the middle class families in Austin, and it very much enhanced my first experience of Halloween in the United States.
