Human Rights Initiative of North Texas, Inc.

About

Human Rights Initiative provides legal services to people who have suffered human rights abuses. We represent immigrants who have been victims of violence. Many HRI clients flee their homelands after experiencing torture and imprisonment because of their religious or political beliefs and apply for asylum in the United States. HRI also handles matters under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act. We represent immigrants who have been abused at the hands of a U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident (green card holder) spouse as well as victims of violent crimes who are eligible for U Visas. HRI also helps immigrant children who are victims of violent crimes, neglect, abuse or abandonment, and human trafficking victims. Legal services are delivered primarily through the agency's extensive network of volunteer attorneys.

Human Rights Initiative additionally provides a limited range of other services to its legal clients. These include referrals to appropriate area service providers, job search assistance, group activities, and individual guidance. While Human Rights Initiative typically provides these services only to legal clients and their families, the agency does make exceptions in certain narrow circumstances.

Mission: Promote international human rights through local service to refugees and immigrants who have suffered human rights abuses.
