G'Local is a one-to-one mentorship program in which mainly U.S. students who are sophomores, juniors, and seniors help newly arriving first-year students adjust to life in the U.S., and also help by introducing them to their own circle of friends and/or inviting them for social, recreational, etc. activities.

Our vision:

Each first-year international student will be matched with an U.S. sophomore, junior or senior. During the first semester, the U.S. students will work as mentors to encourage their international mentees to join activities, utilize all the school resources and services, invite their international partners to meals, and answer any questions for international students.

Our mission:

The program enables U.S. students and international students to experience a cultural exchange. More importantly, this program will help improve international students' experiences at Gustavus Adolphus College and make U.S. students more comfortable with diversity on campus.

  1.  For U.S. students:

G’Local will encourage U.S. students at Gustavus Adolphus College to experience the diversity through a close relationship. It will also encourage students to learn more about new cultures so that they will be ready to become global citizens. U.S. students may not yet have a chance to travel to many different countries, so this is one of the most promising chances to learn new cultures from international peers right on campus! Furthermore, students who plan to pursue majors such as international studies or anthropology or seek to work on program that highlight leadership or diversity could benefit greatly from the program.

    2. For international students:

When coming from different countries, international students encounter a variety of hardships while integrating into the U.S. community. This is often due to their lack of knowledge about the U.S. culture. The program is designed to help international students feel more welcomed and comfortable at Gustavus Adolphus College.

       3.    For our Gustavus community:

Our mission is to help Gustavus become an inclusive, welcoming and willing-to-learn community in general and help "make your life count." Every student should be able to live, learn and experience at their best potential.
