For the past two decades the Island Institute has sought to support Maine's year round island communities by helping to link them with the information and tools needed for effective and responsible management of their natural, social and cultural resources. We feel that the power and responsibility for land and community stewardship ultimately must reside in the local; we try to encourage a sense of local empowerment and responsibility by facilitating communication and mutual education between island communities and regional and state educational and governmental institutions and agencies. To this end, the Island Fellow's Program puts recent college graduates into Maine year round island communities to work on community developed projects. The Island Fellows spend one to two years focused on moving their specific projects forward, as well as integrating into the community and providing an extra set of hands for all the other pieces that make a community run smoothly, from volunteering in the school, to organizing monthly potluck suppers, to coaching sports teams.
