Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta (LVA) is an affiliate member of ProLiteracy and is a member agency of the United Way of Kennebec Valley. We are one of 14 Maine affiliates and have been serving the Southern Kennebec and Northern Lincoln County area for over thirty years. LVA uses a learner-centered approach, working toward the specific goals of each student. Volunteer tutors are trained and matched with one student with a basic commitment to work together for one hour, once per week, for one year. (Actual meeting schedules are determined by the individual tutor and student and will most likely vary to some degree.) LVA provides on-going training and support for tutors and maintains a new readers library for use by both tutors and students. LVA works collaboratively with other local agencies through our Literacy Labs to support individuals with intellectual disabilities. LVA is a strong proponent of family literacy in the community and engages in a number of family literacy oriented activities throughout the year. LVA partners with local Adult Education programs to further support English as a Second Language (ESoL) learners. Volunteer tutor training is held four times a year and dates are available on the LVA website. LVA activities are overseen by an active Board of Directors.
