Organization Mission Statement The mission of Unity in Motion is to help Milwaukee’s most vulnerable central city youth reach their full potential, while also inspiring them to give back to their community. We do this by providing a comprehensive program in which youth develop both academic skills and strong personal values and by partnering with high-performing Milwaukee central city schools and organizations. We offer weekly services including tutoring, nonviolent martial arts, dance, mentoring, postsecondary education preparation, and leadership/values training. In addition, we conduct regular social and community service outings and award post-secondary educational scholarships—all designed to build long-term relationships. We ask our youth and family members to make a long-term commitment to the program. In return, we make a promise to stand by and guide them from adolescence through postsecondary education and early adulthood, ensuring that they have the resources necessary to achieve their postsecondary educational goals.
Unity in Motion has a program in place for the past 16 years that has proven results through a focus on building long-term relationships with urban youth and their families. We ask our youth and family members to make a long-term commitment to the program, and in return, we make a promise to walk with them and guide them from adolescence through post-secondary education and early adulthood, ensuring that they have the resources necessary to achieve their educational goals—including scholarships for college or technical school. As a part of that journey, we provide in-depth, quality programming that includes different elements depending on the age of the youth. For the past several years this program has included: Homework help provided by a large cadre of volunteers One-on-one professional tutoring Nonviolent martial arts Dance Post-secondary education preparation, including career exploration Assistance with selecting and applying to high schools and colleges Required community services opportunities Mentoring and one-on-one family support for students pursuing post-secondary education Post-secondary educational scholarships. Youth move through a series of achievement levels based on grade point average, attendance at core programming, behavioral standards, and community service. The achievement levels are designated by color (similar to martial arts belt ranks), ranging from white to black. Youth have an opportunity to move up one level per semester, and their achievements are recognized at semi-annual award ceremonies. Unity in Motion differs from many other programs in our emphasis on mentoring and relationship building—providing skills and also walking with participants through the process of preparing for, applying to, and succeeding in a post-secondary educational program. Through the involvement of mentors and staff, we hold youth accountable for their own success as they complete each step of their education.
