The Alvin Animal Shelter is operated by the City of Alvin Animal Control Department. General information about the shelter can be found by going to the city?s Web site, www.alvin-tx.gov and clicking on the "City Departments and Utilities" link in the upper left of the page. The shelter?s hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. In addition to the assignment referred to in this column, volunteers are also wanted at the shelter to help with feeding the animals, exercising them, and cleaning the cages. (The shelter deals mainly with dogs and cats, but occasionally something more exotic will show up there.) Unaccompanied volunteers should be at least 17 years of age, but there?s no minimum age for a young person accompanied by a parent volunteer.
