Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program provides free civil legal services to low-income men, women, and children in Harris County and the surrounding area. HVLP helps low-income citizens that other programs often cannot serve, such as those who may not meet the financial criteria of other legal assistance programs and non-US citizens. HVLP annually receives over 30,000 calls for assistance and each year is able to provide over 5,000 clients with free legal advice from a licensed Texas lawyer. In 2011, HVLP referred over 1,500 cases to private attorneys for extended, pro bono representation in family law, probate, guardianship, estate planning, landlord/tenant, and tax matters. Through collaborative efforts with other legal service providers and social service agencies, HVLP seeks to be an agent of change in the community, delivering efficient, effective legal services to Houston?s low-income residents.
