Drastic cuts made by the state legislation to the Medicaid waiver programs that support community-based living for those with disabilities have contributed to Texas being ranked 50th of all states for this kind of funding. For example, home maintenance and repairs that are not crucial to the person’s disability are generally not reimbursed in any form through the Medicaid programs we support. Yet, many of these improvements (e.g., roof repairs, interior painting and appliance maintenance) are vital to providing a quality of life any of us would want for a beloved family member. Indeed, as our clients and their homes age, resource allocation and strategic planning are crucial to provide long-term, high-quality support to this growing population in Texas. Working on these kinds of projects is how our volunteers directly improve the bottom line at our agency.
