The JP Prescription Drug Awareness Foundation is dedicated to raising awareness of the prescription drug misuse/abuse epidemic in our country. Someone dies every 12 minutes due to Rx drug abuse. In Colorado, 1 in 7 high school students have taken Rx medication without a prescription. The Prescription Drug Abuse curriculum is designed to reach middle and high school students. Pharmacists are integral in preventing misuse/abuse. On September 25, 2012 Karen and Don Hill lost their beloved son, James Patrick J.P. Carroll due to a deadly interaction with prescription drugs. J.P. was taking very commonly prescribed benzodiazepines (anti-anxiety medication) and the combination with a single dose of opioids (prescription pain medication) caused him to stop breathing. He was just 26 years old. Our goal is to SPREAD AWARENESS of this epidemic that is causing the death of more people in the U.S. than car accidents and all other drug overdoses combined.
