Nature and Purpose of Agency

The Central Family Life Center, Inc. (CFLC) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that seeks to improve the lives and environment of Staten Island residents. The CFLC was established in 1979 under the aegis of the First Central Baptist Church, led by Rev. Dr. Calvin Rice, and it continues today under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Demetrius Carolina. The 10,000 square foot facility is the only minority-led community center of its kind on Staten Island, and it houses many critical social services programs for the borough's diverse residents.

Mission Statement

Improving the lives and environment of Staten Island residents. The Agency is a multiservice center that has many programs including but not limited to: An After School Program, Senior Group, post incarceration workshops/ support, Women's group, etc.

Tasks Available for Students

After School Program:
CFLC offers a bilingual tutoring and literacy program for K-5 students. Professional educators aid children with homework, computer literacy, effective study skills, standardized test prep, and improvement in Reading, Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Global Studies. The program serves a diverse population of students from nearby communities, many who speak English as a second language. Student will work with 35 students who attend the after school program on Homework and making them feel welcome and safe. Needing Tutors/ Mentors. Bilingual Students are encouraged but all students welcome as volunteers Schedule for this program is (maximum of 4 students per session) Time Requirements: Monday – Thursday 3-6PM

Michael Hines Saturday Academy:
For this site, volunteers will assist the children from grades 3-7 in areas of Math/Reading, test prep, and homework help under the supervision of a certified NYC teacher. 
Time Requirements: Saturdays 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

Senior's on the Move:
Mission is to promote and encourage cultural and social activities that foster health and economic wellness for our seasoned citizens while cultivating and promoting a spirit of unity, fellowship and pride. It is our goal to provide support for our golden agers as they enjoy the adventures of the best time of their lives. Out Vision for Seniors on the Move is to provide all seniors island wide with a multitude of services which fits their immediate and long-term needs. Time Requirements: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 am - 11:00 am & 11:00 am - 2:00 pm.
