MOVE INC

About

MOVE, Inc. currently provides programming to participants ages 512, but seeks to expand that age range in the coming year. Most of MOVE Inc.'s programs are located in Leadership Prep Bedford Stuyvesant Charter School, Brooklyn, NY. This school is an ideal partner for MOVE Inc. in that it believes strongly in parental involvement and supportive academic services combined with cultural and recreational enrichment activities. Afterschool Programming Because academics are vital, our afterschool program provides homework help, tutoring, academic enhancement, organized sports, and cultural activities three days a week throughout the school year to 60 students. During winter and spring recess, the afterschool program takes its participants on educational field trips, such as the many museums, libraries, and historic sites around New York City. Summer Day Camp MOVE Inc.'s summer day camp operates Monday through Friday and serves 60 participants. The program includes academic enrichment, and organized sports, as well as field trips to places like the South Street Seaport, Museum of Natural History the New York Aquarium, Dorney Park. The MOVE Inc. summer day camp has a parental involvement component that includes a family day BBQ and end of summer show. Recreational Programming As part of its comprehensive set of programs designed to address many of the needs stated above, MOVE, Inc. provides a series of organized sports throughout the year. MOVE, Inc. receives sponsorship from the following partners: Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) RBI is a program of Major League Baseball (MLB) targeting inner city youth to generate interest in baseball. Baseball is Americas pastime, yet with each passing year, less youth are interested in learning to play the game and attend live professional baseball games. This program runs from March to August and enrolls 75 young men and women each year. RBI provides uniforms, balls, gloves, catchers equipment, and bases. MOVE, Inc. provides coaches, umpires, and a crowd of cheering parents and community members, encouraging youth participants throughout the games. MOVE, Inc. also receives free tickets for RBI participants, its parents and local partners from the community to see the New York Yankees and New York Mets play live during baseball season. MOVE, Inc. has received sponsorship from RBI for five years now, and in 2011 MOVE, Inc. was featured on 60 Minutes on the weekend of Jackie Robinsons birthday showing dozens of youth engaged in baseball thanks to the partnership between MOVE, Inc. and RBI. WNBA Cares New York Liberty MOVE, Inc. receives sponsorship from the Womens National Basketball Association New York Liberty basketball team for four years now. The Libertys provide basketball clinics and season passes allowing MOVE, Inc. to take its program participants and their families to professional WNBA games throughout the season. This is particularly important to young women, as the Libertys are excellent role models for them. This program enrolls 80 young women and men, from June to August each year. NFL Flag Football A new addition to the MOVE, Inc. sports and recreation program line up, NFL Flag Football has taken the Bed Stuy community by storm. MOVE, Inc. purchased NFL team uniform for the participants, and provided coaches for each team. The NFL sponsors the tournaments such as "Pass, Punt, and Kick" allowing MOVE, Inc. youth to compete with other NFL Flag Football participants across the entire world. The NFL pays for transportation to these tournaments as well. This program began just weeks ago and has 60 young men and women enrolled. The program will run from late October to late November. As an added bonus, the NFL sponsors "Play 60 Nutrition for Kids", promoting healthy diets in an effort to combat childhood obesity. USTA Community Tennis Association For three years now the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Community Tennis Association provides a full turnkey program for the youth of Bed Stuy. MOVE, Inc. does the recruiting, and the USTA does everything else. They secure space and permits, and provide all equipment, balls, rackets, instructors, and more. They also sponsor intramural and citywide tournaments. The USTA also offers scholarships to youth with the potential to development into professional tennis athletes. The program has 30 participants and runs May through July in the Sumner Playground, a few blocks away from the MOVE, Inc. office. Its My Park Days at Sumner Playground MOVE, Inc., Home Depot, Target, and Partnership for Parks, a program of the New York City Parks Department and the City Parks Foundation, all team up semiannually for "Its My Park Day". This is a terrific givebacktothecommunity program as well as a fun intergenerational activity. Volunteers young and old clean the park, repaint park benches and much more. Over fifty people participate in this activity from all over the neighborhood. The Partnership and MOVE, Inc. together provide materials like paint, brushes, shovels, rakes, brooms, etc. Lunch and snacks are also served. Home Depot and Target donated gift cards for the projects participants and provided a corporate representative to make the presentation. Open Space is a premium in Bed Stuy so maintaining what the community has is a top priority for MOVE, Inc.
