A Free Bird

About

A Free Bird a 100% volunteer based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our mission is to provide cancer-battling youth (ages 4 to 18) with opportunities to engage in arts therapy to boost their morale, and aid them in their fight against cancer. We support these young individuals in their exploration of drawing, painting, writing, music, poetry, acting, graphic design, and more. Our motto is to "empower each child to fly free with the arts."

A Free Bird addresses the needs of cancer-battling youth through our 3 main programs:

Dream Big: provides participating children with supervised visits to artistic performances and other events throughout New York City. If participants are unable to leave the hospital, then A Free Bird organizes artistic events at the hospital. The program aims to help participating children to develop a strong connection to an artistic medium, and to inspire them to pursue their creative dream.

Take Flight: offers youth cancer patients more in-depth opportunities to gain an arts education by connecting them to creative mentors, many of whom are distinguished professionals in the New York City arts community, free of charge. Participants will gain access to one-on-one tutoring sessions in their art medium of choice.

Fly Free: supports the artistic journeys of more mature youth artists, who are in remission from cancer. The program focuses on helping these artists expand into the New York City creative community as professionals. A Free Bird connects them with established artists in their preferred art mediums, as well as provides them with information about grants, contests, publishers, and more.
