Programs We Offer
Part of the City of New York/Parks & Recreation, Computer Resource Centers (CRCs) bridge the digital divide by empowering New Yorkers of all ages with free computer access and education.
Located in Parks Recreation Centers throughout NYC, many in historically underserved communities, CRCs offer:

Since CRCs founding in 1997, we have grown from a single computer lab into a network of 27 CRCs, offering technology access and education for over 2,300 people of all ages every week.
On weekday afternoons we dedicate CRCs to children in the Parks AfterSchool Program, serving children ages 6 thorough 13. In the CRCs, our trained staff members encourage children's natural affinity for technology and make learning and self-expression exciting. Through educational games, homework help, newsletter clubs, Internet scavenger hunts, digital media projects our after-school students gain a higher comfort level with technology while developing transferable academic, professional and social skills they need in life.
AfterSchool students participate in a variety of exciting technology-based activities including:
Monthly Challenges incorporate Internet research, writing and drawing programs in creative, theme-based group projects. Students think about topics like how the New Year is celebrated around the world, the significance of Human Rights Day, and what their own holiday would be if they were to design it.
The Sister City Program of the City of New York introduces our students to children across the globe and encourages them to learn about each other's communities, schools, families, and way of life through themed web-based exchanges.
Newsletter Clubs provide our students with an opportunity to express themselves through words, pictures and photographs and give them the chance to show off their work in print. Students are reporters, photographers, and artists for the newsletter production team.
Technology Field Trips provide Parks AfterSchool children with opportunities to actively experience the latest advances in technology. Trips have included Sony Wonderlab and the Verizon Education and Technology Center.
RECYouth video and audio production program enables AfterSchool children and teens to learn about the art of filmmaking.

RECYouth (Reel Education & Communication for Youth) trains both AfterSchool youth and teens in digital video and audio production through hands-on exposure to technology and arts instruction. Students receive technical training in camera operation, sound production, and Final Cut Pro and iMovie editing, with a foundation in research, writing and storyboarding. They are encouraged to express themselves through film, words and music while learning the skills necessary to become digital storytellers, musicians and filmmakers.
We are proud of our students and their accomplishments. Some have created work that has been accepted into film festivals. Select students are invited by our RECYouth instructors to participate in our Youth Advisory Board that screens, discusses and recommends student projects to be viewed at Parks film festivals. Those who wish to continue learning can apply for RECYouth internships and work with CRC coordinators to co-teach video production to after-school participants. Many of our graduates continue to study film/video and audio production beyond their RECYouth experience.

Parks CRCs offer free classes and specialized workshops for all levels of computer users. Equipped with an extensive selection of professional industry-standard software, CRCs offer training in a broad range of computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop and PageMaker. We also provide instruction in topics like web browsing, Internet security, wireless technology, resume writing, and web design. We have dedicated courses for seniors or those that have never touched a computer that teach many of the same skills at a slightly more relaxed pace. We also lead job skills training for Public Assistance recipients in the Parks Opportunity Program. All of our classes are free to recreation center members. Scheduled drop-in times allow independent access to technology for those who wish to check email, design a personal website or learn a new computer application while taking advantage of our high tech equipment.
