Nature and Purpose of Agency
The Bed-Stuy Campaign Against Hunger operates one of the largest client-choice supermarket-style food pantries in the five boroughs, providing food to an average 11,000 people every month. Alongside their core mission of fighting hunger in central Brooklyn and the greater New York metropolitan area, they also work to address health issues like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease that disproportionately affect their customer population. They do this by emphasizing healthy choices in the pantry, providing community education programs about nutrition and physical activity, providing support services like benefits outreach and health screenings, and growing fresh produce on in our own urban community garden. The pantry was one of the first to adopt the client-choice model, which gives customers the right to select pantry items based on their own needs and preferences, rather than receiving a pre-packed bag.
Tasks Available for Students
Since the pantry is set up like a supermarket, volunteers serve in positions much like supermarket employees, such as providing customer service, restocking shelves, and maintaining a clean and organized shopping area and storage area. This gives volunteers the opportunity to interact directly with our client population and to develop real-world communication and service skills.
