15 HOURS or More students:
An interview/orientation process is required for this site if completing more than 6 hours of service. Interviews and orientation will be held Wednesday afternoons, some exception will be made for students who are unavailable on Wednesdays, please contact Kathleen to schedule.
We also do a Nurses Aide registry background check on all volunteers as well as a Sex Offender background check. Students will be required to give me the last 4 digits of their SS for these. There is no fee for these checks.
Form must be mailed to the individual who is the reference and then emailed/faxed or mailed back to us. Please contact the site about retrieving a reference letter before attending volunteering.
Tasks Available for Students
Various tasks available including; visiting and transporting (by wheelchair) residents, recreation, reading to residents, computer training, DVD Database maintenance, assisting activity staff with group programs i.e. music, games, art, discussions. There is also a possibility to aid in Adult Day Services, Social Work/Nursing/HR clerical work – this will be determined by need.
They have to agree to assist the recreation team in running an activity program. They would have to be comfortable interacting with our elders. Assisting with set up/breakdown and any other skills that may be needed.
Students who need to do 10 hours or more must sign up as a Volunteer at Chapin Home, not a Group participant. they have to agree to assist the recreation team in running an activity program. 10 hours requirement would be scheduled 2 hours a visit until completion.
12 hours requirements can schedule 2 hours or 3 hours/visit until completion.
Hours more than this will be individually assessed during initial interview.
Volunteer Times available to schedule your service:
7 days a week between the hours of 9-4
2 nights a week (Wed/Fri) between the hours of 5-8

One group a week will oversee our DVD/CD/mp3/Shuffle/magazine/Book collection and maintain it.
(Tuesday 1:30 – 4:30) 4 – 5 students
One group will assist with our Nail Salon activity, assisting with doing Nails (painting only), socializing with staff.
(Thursday, 1:30 – 4:30)
One group a week will assist with Social/Craft or Game programs
(Wednesday 1:30 – 4:30)
One group a week will assist with Weekend games
(Saturday 1:00 – 4:00)
Please note the dress code for this site: business casual is preferred. If you find yourself unable to access business causal attire, a more causal look is acceptable. This does not include shorts, t-shirts with writing (unless it is an SJU t-shirt) and mid-drift tops. If jeans are your only option, ensure they are not torn. Shoes should be neat sneakers or comfortable shoes. No sandal/open toe or open back shoes for safety.
Student Awareness/Special Instructions
Three (3) medical requirements – A copy of your medical records; and a recent TB/PPD shot (within a year); Proof of MMR, current season's flue vaccine. You may pick up your medical records at the Health Office in DaSilva Hall, free of charge. As for a Reference Letter, you can pick one up in the AS-L Office located in Lourdes Hall. Students must be informed that there is to be NO FOOD and NO FLUIDS given to any resident at any time. Also, if students are not sure of any situation at anytime during the visit to reach out to the Volunteer Supervisor/Recreation Team, Nurse, or any Department Head at the home.
*NYS Department of Health has implemented that workers/volunteers are HIGHLY recommend to receive the Flu Shot each season. Chapin Home makes this mandatory if you wish to volunteer during the heavy flu season. Documentation of vaccination must include the name and address of the individual who ordered or administered the vaccine and the date of vaccination with Lot #. This must be given to the nursing home before starting service.
Union Tpke west to 164st. Make a left, cross over Grand Central Parkway. Make a left at SECOND traffic light onto Chapin Parkway. Home is UP THE HILL ON THE LEFT. (Please note that there is no parking in our lot during the weekend day office hours you must find parking on the street. Evenings and Weekends you can often get a spot)
Take Kew Gardens bound Q46 to 164th Street. Transfer to Jamaica bound Q65 and exit at 164th and 84th drive.
