Nature and Purpose of Agency

QCH is a multi-service settlement house that serves nearly 25,000 children, youth, adults and older adults at 22 different sites in 11 neighborhoods throughout Queens.  Queens Community House provides individuals and families with the tools to enrich their lives and build healthy, inclusive communities.

 

Description of Opportunities with Youth

The QCH Pomonok Center and Forest Hills Center provide free After-School Programs for children in the community from Kindergarten through sixth grade from September through June. Children are able to enjoy an array of hands-on educational and recreational activities that encourage academic success, positive decision making, and positive relationship building. Free summer camp for children ages 6-10 in July and August. Children can enjoy a summer full of: academic enrichment, sports, games, arts ‘n’ crafts, fitness, field trips, and many other exciting hands-on educational and recreational activities.

 

Tasks Available for Students

Assist with after-school and summer camp programs. Opportunities to develop workshops and educational activities for students and campers are available.

 

Time Requirements

90 hours during the school year or summer months. Weekdays only.

 

Student Awareness/Special Instructions

Students must complete fingerprinting through the Department of Health and a Background Check form. 3 references and a resume are also required. Further information will be provided by QHC contact person.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Description of Opportunities with Older Adults

The QCH Rego Park Senior Center serves a hot lunch Monday through Friday to community members 60 and over. The QCH Kew Gardens Community Center offers computer lab time for community members to email, print, use the internet, etc.

 

Tasks Available for Students

Assist with serving meals and interacting with seniors at Rego Park Senior Center. Assist with computer questions and concerns at the Kew Gardens Community Center.

 

Time Requirements

Rego Park: 20 hours weekdays only

Kew Gardens: 20 hours weekdays only

 

Student Awareness/Special Instructions

Students must complete a volunteer application and express an interest in working with seniors.

Public Transportation

Take the Q30 bus toward Little Neck Parkway.  Get off at Utopia Parkway/Horace Harding Expressway.  Walk to 175th Place and HH Expressway (under the freeway).    Transfer to the Q17 going toward Flushing.  Get off at Kissena Blvd.  Walk along Kissena Blvd (under the freeway) to Pomonok House (about 35 minutes)

Driving Directions

Drive North on Utopia Pkwy.  Go left on 73rd Avenue.  Go right on Kissena Blvd.  Pomonok House is located on the right, across the street from Queens College (about 10 minutes).

 

Forest Hills Community Center

Public Transportation

Take the E, F, M or R subway trains to Forest Hills- 71st Avenue. Take the Q23 bus to 108th Street and 62nd Drive. Turn left onto 62nd Drive and the community center will be located on your left.

Driving Directions

Take I-495 to Exit 21 towards 108th Street. Continue on Horace Harding Expressway. Turn right onto 108th Street. Turn left onto 62nd Drive. The community center will be on your left.

 

Rego Park Senior Center

Public Transportation

Take the Q59 or Q60 buses to 62nd Drive and Queens Boulevard.

Driving Directions

Take 1-495 to Exit 19. Continue on Horace Harding Expressway. Turn right onto Junction Blvd. Turn right onto 62nd Drive. Turn right at the 1st cross street onto Queens Boulevard.

 

Kew Gardens Community Center

Public Transportation

Take the E or F subway train to Union Turnpike- Kew Gardens, Q60 bus to Queens Blvd/Union Turnpike or Q10 bus to Kew Gardens Road and 80th Road. 2nd floor.

Driving Directions

 Take I-495 to Exit 22A-E. Follow signs for Grand Central Parkway and merge onto it. Take Exit 12 off of Grand Central Parkway towards 78 Ave/Queens Blvd. Turn left onto Queens Blvd.
