Volunteer Action for Aging

About

VAA provides the following services and community service opportunities:

JANUARY 2014 Homeless Hygiene Care kit Event: Volunteers of all ages including seniors, Veterans, and young adults will gather to assemble homeless care kits. This event is held during the January celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The kits will be delivered to the homeless folks in the Long Beach Metropolitan area. We would love to include lots more senior volunteers to help us package these donated personal hygiene supplies.

JANUARY 2014: Cell Phone Instruction To assist seniors understand the basic or advanced functions of their cell phones or Smart phones we need patient teachers who can work individually with seniors at a downtown Long Beach senior apartment building. A great cross-generational event

ALL YEAR 2014 Friendly Visitor/Phone Friend Volunteer: on a weekly basis, volunteers provide either friendly visits or phone calls to matched clients. They offer emotional support, companionship and conversation to reduce loneliness and isolation.

Serve Day Event: VAA recruits volunteers to help our clients with basic cleaning and simple home repairs.

Writing Letters for our Troops Event: clients and volunteers come together to write letters and knit scarves for our active military and veterans. Letters and knitted items are sent to Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization that sends care packages to the military.

Thanksgiving Meal Delivery Event 2014: This event has become a family tradition for many and we have volunteers who help year after year. On Thanksgiving morning 2013 , 1000 volunteers delivered warm Thanksgiving meals to over 2000 disabled adults and seniors in their homes and senior residences throughout the Long Beach Metropolitan area.

Volunteer Action for Aging is GROWING in 2014. We have an expanded staff and expanded resources to put on monthly events in 2014 to benefit isolated, frail seniors and disabled adults all over the Southern California area. Check out our website for lots of news or call for a copy of our newsletter.

Mission: Volunteer Action for Aging (VAA) is a volunteer service program operating under Independence at Home, a non-profit care management organization that supports disabled adults and seniors in their efforts to remain healthy and independent in their homes and communities. Our volunteer program works to assist and develop nurturing and caring relationships with disabled adults and homebound seniors.
