So Others Might Eat (SOME)

About

SOME has been serving the homeless and poor since 1970. We are the only interfaith organization in the District that offers a comprehensive and holistic approach to caring for the homeless and extremely poor residents of our city. Though best known for serving more than 800 meals every day of the week, we provide programs that meet a full spectrum of needs that restore hope and dignity to the men, women, and children who come to our doors.

We meet the immediate daily needs of the people we serve with food, clothing, and health care. We help break the cycle of homelessness by offering services, such as affordable housing, job training, addiction treatment, and counseling, to the poor, the elderly and individuals with mental illness.

SOME's integrated service model allows poor and homeless individuals in our community to move forward on a path out of homelessness and poverty.

As of January 2020 there were an estimated 6,380 homeless men, women and children in our nation's capital. One in six DC residents live at or below the poverty line.

What We Do

SOME offers comprehensive supportive services that allow us to meet the needs of the people we serve at each point on their journey from homelessness to independence. Our services are organized into three levels of care: Emergency, Rebuilding, and Stability services. We value empowering the people we serve by respecting their human dignity and by helping them to restore hope in their lives.

Emergency Services: Dining room meals, provision of clothing, showers, groceries, medical services, and emergency housing for elderly

Rebuilding Services: Residential addiction recovery, employment training, and mental health services

Stability Services: Support service affordable housing for families and single adults, including seniors and veterans

Our main location for volunteer service is in our dining room on 71 O Street, NW, in DC.  The dining room is open every day for breakfast and lunch, rain or shine, snow or government delay.
