The Fresh Start Home is a transitional living facility for homeless women, 19 and older, without dependents. The home provides support for homeless women by providing temporary housing, education opportunities, job skills development, preparation for independent living, and health and medical assessments. Some opportunities to be involved with Fresh Start include: mentoring; completing home projects, such as painting, carpeting, and other "fix-up" jobs; teaching life skills, such as sewing, cooking, using computers, etc.; providing home and auto maintenance; landscaping, coordinating donation pick-ups; organizing a donation drive for clothing and toiletries; providing transportation; and being an office assistant (who write thank you notes, run office errands, etc.). There are group and individual activities available, for both one-time and semester commitments. Fresh Start is close to UNL's city campus, and time requirements vary based on current projects. Some training is required, and it's recommended to have a base knowledge of computers. You're also advised to wear durable clothing.
