The IDEAS Social Innovation Challenge is MIT's annual social entrepreneurship program housed in the PKG Public Service Center, now in its 19th year, IDEAS allows you and your team members to apply your education and expertise in collaboration with community partners to address entrenched social and environmental challenges around the world. Through this program that culminates to an annual showcase and awards ceremony, teams learn to develop creative solutions in partnership with community partners. You also benefit from a supportive body of reviewers, mentors and up to $16,000 in funding to further your efforts with local stakeholders.
Over 160 awarded IDEAS teams have implemented innovative service projects in 44 countries, impacting hundreds of thousands of lives. These teams have secured more than $65 million in additional funding. Nearly 50 percent of IDEAS projects are still active in some form today.
You can enter IDEAS in two application phases over the school year: October 27 and February 11. Teams can apply in either phase, but we recommend applying during the first phase and using the intervening period to improve your application before re-submitting it during the second phase. Throughout the academic year, we offer students and their potential collaborators opportunities to meet one another at various events and share their ideas and expertise. Teams take part in an initial proposal review process, which provides feedback, staff support, and potential mentor matching.
