About
At Kedila, we conduct two program tracks to help uplift our constituents and attempt to bring them out of poverty. The first track is youth focused programming through the 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) After School/Summer Camp.
Kedilas 21st Century Community Learning Center includes After School/Summer Camp programs for school-aged children from low-income families. In the first hour of the After School program, students receive homework help and tutoring. The second hour is dedicated to enrichment activities such as art classes, karate lessons, African drumming and dance, field trips, and science experiments. These activities expose the students to information and activities to which they may otherwise not have access. At the end of each day, students receive a nutritious snack and drink. During the summer, the program expands to fill a whole day with mornings dedicated to academic instruction and remediation aimed at bridging the gap between school years. The afternoons are dedicated to enrichment and more traditional summer camp activities. Students receive a nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack each day. Through our programming, our students have a safe place to learn and have fun, so they can be more successful in school and in life.
The second track is a program called YouthBuild that focuses on young adults ages 18-24 who have not obtained a high school diploma. While in the program, participants prepare for their General Education Diploma (GED) examination, learn basic construction skills, and participate in leadership development. The training allows them to enter the workforce, enroll in certification programs, or enroll in higher education upon graduating. Out of the sixty-six graduates since 2009, more that 60% are employed or are attending Delgado Community College.
