About
The Ship Guild operates and maintains the tall ship Gazela and the historic tugboat, Jupiter, both home-ported in Philadelphia and docked at Penn's Landing at Market Street. The Ship Guild is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Volunteers with the Guild share a strong commitment to preserving Philadelphia's maritime tradition. The ships rely on the contributions of time and effort from our volunteers to stay afloat.
There are many opportunities to become part of this effort whether your interests are woodworking and rigging, engineering, historical research, sailing, or marketing and presentations. As a volunteer you become part of a crew. You will work alongside the professional officers doing as they do. One minute you may find yourself manning the helm, later painting decks. Our crew earns hours toward sailing by volunteering time towards restoration, outreach, or dockside maintenance programs. Whether you share your daily skills, or learn new ones, you will find a niche in this diverse organization.
All volunters are asked to join the Ship Guild.
NOTE:In order to sail on the ships, volunteers must: > join the Ship Guild; > provide volunteer service of at least 50 hours; > participate in the Guild training classes designed to teach safe operating techniques on these historic vessels.
Mission: The Ship Guild's mission is to preserve, share and operate our historic vessels. Our mission is enhanced by programs which bring lessons of seamanship, traditional sailing and maritime culture to the public. Our volunteers are people of all ages, backgrounds and skills who share a love of historic vessels and maritime history.
