Bikes for the World is a network of individuals and community service organizations and faith communities in the mid-Atlantic region dedicated to collecting good-quality bicycles for productive re-use in developing countries. Between its founding in January 2005 and January 2014, Bikes for the World has collected and donated more than 86,000 bicycles in 12 countries, including Sri Lanka (tsunami recovery), Ghana (micro enterprise development), Namibia (delivery of health services and micro enterprise development), Panama (training and employment for individuals with disabilities), Costa Rica (micro enterprise development), and Guatemala (youth development & vocational training). More recently, Bikes for the World is increasingly supporting access to education through the provision of bicycles, especially to keep girls in secondary school.
Mission: (1) Collect and put good-quality bicycles to productive re-use in developing countries, (2) provide satisfying and tangible community service opportunities to individuals, businesses, and community service organizations in the United States, collecting and shipping bicycles overseas.
